Anticipating
a need for a new congregation in this area, Orange Presbytery purchased
property on Liberty Road in 1965 and called Angus W. McGregor as
organizing pastor in 1969. A small group began meeting in the pastor’s
living room, later moving to the cafeteria at Southeast Junior
High School. During the next two years, a community of worship,
service and study developed. They reached out to persons for whom “traditional” church
held little appeal by offering an alternative experience in worship
and program.
CIC was officially organized as a Presbyterian congregation of
109 members in December of 1971. With $189 in the church account
in 1972, 41 families took on a $240,000 debt in a leap of faith
and built our current building, which was occupied in June of 1973.
James M. Rissmiller became pastor in 1978. The building debt
was paid off in 1987 and by the end of 1991, membership numbered
336.
In 2003, Frederick
A. Beck was called as pastor of CIC, and the church continues
to grow in spirit and numbers.
